Samuel Mbugua

Mr. Samuel Mbugua is an IT professional and researcher with a background in software development, information systems, and health informatics. He has extensive experience designing and developing digital health solutions for low- and middle-income settings, with technical expertise in Java, Android, Python, web technologies, and database systems.

During his tenure at AMPATH-Kenya, he developed Kenya’s first mobile application for HIV home-based counselling and testing. He has also contributed to the OpenMRS and mUzima open-source communities, developing and supporting eHealth solutions designed for resource-constrained settings.

His Master’s research in Information Technology focused on using mobile phones to provide clinical summaries to patients receiving continuous care. His ongoing doctoral research explores the use of mobile technologies and gamification to improve the adoption and use of personal health records and ultimately support better health outcomes.

His broader research and professional interests include digital health, artificial intelligence, gamification, big data, mobile technologies, and the application of emerging technologies to improve healthcare delivery.
