Kenya's drylands are among the regions most vulnerable to climate variability and climate change. Increasing rainfall variability, recurrent droughts, rising temperatures and pressure on natural resources continue to affect livelihoods, food security and the resilience of pastoral and agro-pastoral communities.
My research and professional engagement in Kenya's drylands have focused on understanding how communities experience and respond to these changes, particularly through the integration of scientific climate information with indigenous knowledge and locally developed adaptation strategies.
Research evidence demonstrates that climate information can play an important role in strengthening community preparedness and decision-making. However, the availability of climate information alone does not guarantee effective adaptation. Information must be timely, accessible, understandable and relevant to the decisions that farmers and pastoralists make.
Pastoral communities have historically developed sophisticated systems for responding to environmental variability. These include livestock mobility, diversification of livelihoods, indigenous forecasting, traditional resource-management institutions and social support networks. Rather than replacing these systems, scientific climate information can complement and strengthen indigenous knowledge.
A key challenge is therefore to build effective linkages between science, indigenous knowledge, policy and local practice. Researchers have an important role to play in generating evidence, but research becomes more valuable when its findings are translated into practical interventions and policies that respond to the realities faced by communities.
Climate-resilient development in Kenya's drylands should therefore focus on:
- Strengthening climate information and early-warning systems;
- Improving access to and interpretation of seasonal climate forecasts;
- Integrating indigenous knowledge with scientific climate information;
- Supporting sustainable pastoral and agro-pastoral livelihoods;
- Improving water and natural-resource management;
- Strengthening food-security interventions;
- Supporting climate-smart and drought-resilient agricultural practices;
- Enhancing collaboration among universities, government, communities and development partners; and
- Ensuring that research evidence informs policy and practice.
The challenge of climate change is not only an environmental issue. It is also a question of livelihoods, food security, development, governance and social resilience. Universities and researchers therefore have a responsibility to generate evidence that can contribute to practical solutions.
At the University of Eldoret, interdisciplinary research and collaboration provide an important platform for addressing these challenges. By connecting research, innovation, policy and community knowledge, we can contribute to building more resilient communities and sustainable landscapes.
Research should not end with publication. Its ultimate value is realized when evidence contributes to better decisions, improved livelihoods and meaningful societal change.
